Wendy Kemp stands as a shining example of what it means to embody the values of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. Her journey through the world of jewellery is not only impressive but deeply inspiring, shaped by dedication, talent and a genuine desire to help others. Every step of her career reflects the Guild’s commitment to exceptional workmanship, integrity and personal service, and it is clear that she represents these standards with heartfelt pride.
Jewellery has always been far more than a craft for Wendy. Since graduating from the Birmingham School of Jewellery in 1996, she has devoted her life to developing her skills and sharing her passion with others. Early in her career she showcased her work in galleries across the UK, selling to shops and attending craft fairs. Even then she held a clear vision of running her own business in a way that complemented family life, something many craftspeople admire and strive for. As the years passed and her three children grew older, Wendy embraced the opportunity to return more fully to the bench she loved, creating and selling her designs both from her open studio and online.
Teaching became a major part of Wendy’s life too. What began as after school clubs for her children and their friends blossomed into full workshops for adults. Over the course of around twelve years she taught more than 3000 people the traditional jewellery making techniques that have been passed down through generations. This dedication to sharing skills echoes the Guild’s ethos of preserving craftsmanship and ensuring it thrives in modern times. Those who joined her workshops not only left with professional looking jewellery they had made themselves but also gained a new appreciation for the time, patience and expertise required to create handcrafted pieces.
Wendy has also used her creativity to support meaningful causes. She has long donated her skills to raise funds for charities, with her primary focus now on Taylor Made Dreams, a local organisation supporting children with life limiting illnesses. Her ability to blend compassion with craft is a true reflection of the integrity and kindness valued by the Guild of Master Craftsmen.
In 2017 Wendy faced a life changing moment when she was diagnosed with a benign yet potentially fatal brain tumour. Despite this challenge she continued to create and found comfort in her craft and her spirituality. This period led her toward Buddhist philosophy which has since had a profound influence on her life and the pieces she makes. Her resilience and unwavering love for her work resonate strongly with the Guild’s emphasis on dedication and professional pride.
The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 brought another shift as workshops came to a sudden halt. Wendy turned to watercolour painting to keep her daughter and her friends engaged creatively and this soon evolved into her first published book in 2021. This burst of artistic expression later inspired a stunning collection of one off jewellery pieces that she continues to develop with hopes of exhibiting them in the future.
A pivotal moment in Wendy’s career came when she realised she wanted to create jewellery with deeper meaning. Several people approached her requesting memorial jewellery and the idea resonated instantly. With her formal gemmological training from the Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain and her experience working with gemstones in Hatton Garden, she set about crafting a series of thoughtful memorial collections that brought comfort, beauty and purpose.
Quality is at the heart of everything she creates. As Wendy expresses, she only uses the finest materials to ensure that every piece stands the test of time and can be handed down through generations. This devotion to durability and craftsmanship is perfectly aligned with the standards upheld by the Guild of Master Craftsmen.
Her newest diamond memorial designs reflect this commitment with striking clarity. She describes them as crafted to be both timeless and enduring, with ashes discreetly placed beneath each diamond to create a subtle yet powerful connection. Every design becomes a symbol of treasured memories, celebrating a life well lived and capturing the everlasting essence of the soul in a way that is both elegant and deeply meaningful.
Wendy takes incredible pride in offering a personal and compassionate experience to each customer. She listens with care, keeps clients informed throughout the process and creates pieces that provide lasting comfort during the most difficult moments. It is work she truly feels she was born to do, and the heartfelt feedback she receives reinforces that belief time and time again.
In 2024 she wrote and illustrated her third book, When Robin Found Her Purpose, a gentle and comforting story offered as a complimentary gift with every memorial jewellery purchase. Many of her designs are inspired by robins, feathers, angel wings and forget me not flowers which beautifully reflect spirit, love and remembrance. She also offers bespoke choices such as ashes set beneath gemstones or hair or fabric incorporated into designs, ensuring every piece is as meaningful as it is exquisite.
Wendy’s life and work demonstrate the very essence of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. Her craftsmanship is exceptional, her integrity is unwavering and her commitment to helping others is at the heart of everything she creates. Through her memorial jewellery she continues to make a genuine difference, offering comfort, beauty and artistry with every piece she brings to life. The Guild is proud to support Wendy on her ongoing journey, recognising her as a craftswoman whose dedication, skill and compassion truly reflect the standards and spirit the Guild holds in the highest regard.
