Sherriff Stained Glass

Stained Glass expertsSherriff Stained Glass Specialists are a family run company in Dorset with over 30 years’ experience in stained glass and leaded windows.

The company was founded by Steve Sherriff who discovered a love of stained glass and leaded windows following his service in the RAF. His passion turned into a business which has grown successfully. Originally started in a home workshop the business has progressed to a commercial unit in Wimborne, Dorset. The business is very much at the core of the Sherriff family. In the last two years Steve has been slowly retiring and handed the reigns over to his son, Nathan Sherriff.

Nathan on site

Nathan has worked alongside his father since the age of 17 and developed a passion for stained glass work, just like his father. When Nathan recently took over the business as managing director the company was renamed Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists. Steve continues to work as a consultant for the company and is called upon for his expertise whilst enjoying his retirement.

As experts in stained glass windows and leaded windows, Sherriff Stained Glass Specialists carry out a number of services across the UK and Europe including stained glass and leaded window repair and restoration, using original materials and traditional techniques. They are equipped to restore all kinds of window frames, including wooden, original metal casements and stone mullioned window frames. A restored stained glass window and leaded light will last in excess of 100 years once it has been carefully re-leaded at the workshop.

The team is made up of highly skilled craftsmen who have been trained by Steve and Nathan over the years. This ensures that quality is at the heart of everything they do. They are passionate about the work and dedicated to preserving the history of windows. They have the knowledge and ability to conduct all aspects of lead window conservation and restoration, and are comfortable in working alongside the main contractor on large building projects.

Recent work

Recent work has included both historic and modern buildings, Grade 1 and 2 listed houses and churches with beautiful stained glass windows and leaded lights. Four years ago, for example, the company designed a modern window for Holy Family Catholic Church in Slough showing an interpretation of St John and St Mary Magdalene at the cross. They have also been tasked with removing and restoring the three J. Dudley Forsyth stained glass windows at the renowned Royal Star & Garter building project in Richmond, London.

The company has also undertaken recent repairs for the traditional stained glass windows at the Holy Rood Church in Shillingstone, Dorset, metal repairs and frames for The Chapel in East Sussex as well as work at a number of private homes, on both windows and doors. There is a huge portfolio of varied and successful work carried out over the last few years, either working in situ or involving the removal and transportation of work for repair or restoration to its workshop in Dorset.

They have recently undertaken work in St Gallen, Switzerland designing and building four family crest stained glass windows for a notable family who are restoring a castle back to its former glory. The windows were fitted into an outside tearoom in the baroque gardens.

Double and triple glazing

Many home owners and churches want preserve and upgrade beautiful windows but also deal with draughts. The company can help preserve a building’s original windows through secondary glazing and even triple glazing. A secondary glazing system can be installed that is almost invisible once fitted whilst triple glazing adds an extra layer for warmth and protection. To achieve triple glazing with stained and leaded glass, a stained glass panel is encapsulated inside a double glazed unit. This adds value and character to a home.

Sherriff Stained Glass also offer their own hand made Conservation Grade Glazed Units which closely mimic a traditional leaded window which they have fitted to many listed and historic homes over the years. One example of this was at Middle Knowle at Royal Tunbridge Wells. This was a major project for the company in 2018 when the team fitted 178 Conservation Grade Double Glazed Units at the property along with 78 restored original metal window frames, designed to meet modern heritage double glazing standards with a u value of 1.6 and yet retaining the characteristics of the period house.

Looking ahead

The company offer a flexible service and are passionate about putting their customers first; ensuring their windows will last the test of time. Since its establishment the company has grown from a workshop at home to purpose built unit that is fully equipped to deal with any size of project in any location.  As a family business they have many years of expertise in their field with a strong demand for their services. This year the company are expanding the business to a second purpose built unit in Dorset which is very exciting as they hope to further grow the metal restoration side of the business.

Both Steve and Nathan are proud to have been awarded as Master Craftsmen, the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass and are also Freeman of the City of London, being inducted into one of the oldest livery companies in London.
